Deja vu all over again.

It was 4:15pm, and the big yellow bus was rumbling up the street. It was the end of the first day of school. I couldn't wait to see Madan hop off. I wondered, what would he be like? Excited? Tired? A total sobbing mess? The doors opened and Doobie hopped off.

HI MOM!

(He was happy. Hallelujah!) Hey! How was it? Do you want to go back tomorrow?

Fun! Yeah! I'll go back.

(Thank god. Like homeschooling was ever an option?)

So, what did you do?

Um, I forget.

Seriously? My son just spent nearly 9 hours away from me and can't remember one single thing? I went for the obvious. What did you have for lunch?

He wasn't biting.

Um. I have to go to the bathroom.

I decided to cut the kid a break and begin the inquisition after he was done. Maybe a little relief would bring back some memories.

Sooooo, um, how was resting period? Did you use your resting towel? (I was reaching.)

Yeah. They put me next to the garbage. IT STUNK. Why did I have to rest NEXT TO GARBAGE?

I was finally getting somewhere, even if it was trash talk. Rather than pursue it, I opted to move onto a happier topic.

What was your favorite part of school?

Hmmm...riding the bus.

(Seriously?) Anything else?

Yeah. Recess. That was fun. And, I liked lunch, too.

Madan, what did you do after the bus and before recess? Did you learn anything? Color? Sing a song?

Um, I dunno. We did stuff. I don't remember. Maybe I'll know tomorrow.

Oh for the love of god! Was this all I was going to get for the rest of the year? So, I did the unthinkable. Rather than put him in a headlock and give him a noogie until he 'fessed up, I let it go and tried again the next day. The conversation:

Hey, Madan! How'd it go?

Fine.

What did you do today?

Um. Same stuff as yesterday.

if it makes you feel any better for the most part i am not getting much more out of tess either... when i asked her her favorite part she says all of it.... the only stuff she is giving up is where she sat at lunch , what she did at recess and what they had for a snack! oh and who got a time out or didn't get a skittle (sp??) for making bad choices!!!

It's awesome when they are STILL saying the same thing in highschool. Really. I kid you not!

try asking more specifics...like "who did you sit next to at lunch?"..."what song did you sing?" apparently this helps to avoid the dreaded "i don't know" response. i must of learned this on greatschools or something. :-)
