That WAHM-I-am!
That WAHM-I-am!
The doobies do not like that WAHM-I-am.
But, they have no choice. I decided to trade in my stay-at-home-mom status for some coin. I want to buy a new pair of jeans and not have to sneak money out of Mike's wallet. I want to purchase shoes from somewhere other than Target. If I work my way into a bathing suit this summer, it will not be from Walmart!*
Ergo, therefore, I am now a work-at-home-mom. WAHM I am.
A long time ago, I was a working mom with a child in daycare. That was tough. Punting my half-pint every morning was hard. Then, crawling through Connecticut's I-90 traffic to get to him every afternoon was agonizing. I took endless sick days for my sick child and worked while I was illin' to make up for it. Working and mommying was no picnic. It was stressful.
So, I hung up my suits and opted to stay at home. I had no obligations other than to care for my doobies -- plus a few volunteer duties on the side. I could park it at a park whenever I chose, run errands at will and do all sorts of fun things. But, full-time mommying means a lot of togetherness with your kids. And that, my friends, is hard, too.
Seeing how I like a challenge, I've now decided to do the impossible. Work at home with the kids. I'm now taking conference calls while cleaning dishes, wiping ass while brainstorming sales prospects, preventing playground disasters while penning ideas and making dinner while writing emails. Yes, my laptop screen has recipe remnants all over it. It's like a kid's shirt. You can tell what we ate just by looking at it.
Luckily, my company has embraced my situation. And, so far, Mike and the doobies have, too. The challenge is making sure I give enough time to everyone. Notice I didn't say equal. Family still comes first. You know what they say about squeaky wheels...
*Yeah, it's all about spending. It's one woman's economic stimulus plan.

Good for you! I am a SAHM who dreams of someday doing something. I am new to your blog so maybe you've shared your story before. But, I think it would be interesting to tell us how you started working from home and how you found your position or negotiated the work from home part.
Great meeting you today! Good luck with being a WAHM...I find it extremely challenging working fulltime and then dealing with the kids after work. Can't imagine how much harder it must be trying to be a WAHM.
And you as well, Managed Chaos!
Indy - I wish I had a great story about how I researched companies, pitched myself and landed a job. Truth is, I found my current opp through a friend I used to work with ages ago. But, maybe that's the gem in the story?
My friend knew I was a Mom and that I wanted something flexible. She also knew my work ethic. And, because she was drowning in work, she knew she needed another person to offload to. I pulled my resume together, she pitched the idea to her boss and voila!
Nothing's that simple, of course. But, if you can start with a friend. That's an easier way to find something that suits your situation.
Hope that helps!
